Fresh data on hypertension are presented in the report 'Longer time spent in light physical activity is associated with reduced arterial stiffness in older adults.' "Habitual moderate-to-vigorous-intensity physical activity attenuates arterial stiffening. However, it is unclear whether light physical activity also attenuates arterial stiffening," investigators in Tokyo, Japan report (see also Hypertension).

The September, 2010 issue of the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported a trial conducted by researchers in Taiwan which found an anti-inflammatory benefit for pyridoxine (vitamin B6) supplementation in rheumatoid arthritis patients.

Dr Y-C Huang of Chung Shan Medical University in Taichung and colleagues randomized 35 adults with rheumatoid arthritis to receive 5 milligrams per day folic acid or 5 milligrams folic acid plus 100 milligrams vitamin B6 for 12 weeks. (Seventy-four percent of the participants were being treated with methotrexate, the standard treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, which interferes with folate metabolism.) Blood samples obtained from the subjects at the beginning and end of the study were analyzed for plasma pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP, the active form of vitamin B6), serum folate, immune parameters, and factors involved in inflammation, including C-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-a).

At the end of the twelve weeks, interleukin-6 and TNF-a were decreased among those who received supplemental vitamin B6. Higher plasma interleukin-6 levels were related to reduced levels of plasma pyridoxal 5'-phosphate. No significant effect on immune parameters was observed. Read More...

Vitamin D may help control asthma!

Health News: A review of 60 years of studies suggests vitamin D added to an asthma action plan may improve asthma control, U.S. and Canadian researchers find.

Lead author Dr. Manbir Sandhu, a Vancouver allergist, and colleagues conducted a review of the research on asthma and vitamin D and found vitamin D deficiency is associated with increased airway hyper-responsiveness, lower lung functions and inferior asthma control.

In addition, the researchers say vitamin D deficiency is more common in those who are obese, have African-American ethnicity and are from westernized countries -- reflecting a higher-risk population for asthma.

"There is a possible cause-and-effect relationship between vitamin D deficiency and uncontrolled asthma," Sandhu says in a statement. "Evidence suggests that vitamin D has a number of biologic factors that are important in regulating key mechanisms in asthma."

The findings are published in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology.

Those who adhered to a diet low in carbohydrates but rich in animal-based fats and proteins increased their risk of death - especially by cancer, according to a study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, led by Simmons College nutrition professor Teresa Fung, Sc. D.

This study is the first of its kind to demonstrate the link between different types of low carbohydrate diets and mortality. It also sought to determine the long-term impact of low carbohydrate diets, which have been promoted as an effective option for weight loss and improving health.

Conversely, the study found that a diet low in carbohydrates but rich in plant-based fats and proteins was associated with a lower risk of mortality. Read More...
