Men with prostate cancer who take anticoagulants like aspirin in addition to radiation therapy or surgery may be able to cut their risk of dying of the disease by more than half, according to a large study presented on November 3, 2010, at the 52nd Annual Meeting of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) in San Diego. WASHINGTON, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- A new study has found that regular consumption of soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages is associated with a clear and consistently greater risk of metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. According to the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) researchers, the study provides empirical evidence that intake of sugary beverages should be limited to reduce risk of these conditions.

The study appears online Wednesday in the journal Diabetes Care and will appear in the November print edition.

An article published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association reports that periodontitis, a disease characterized by inflammation of the gums and the development of pockets between the teeth and gums that can lead to tooth loss, is less prevalent among those with a higher intake of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids include eicosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid and alpha-linolenic acid, and are often reduced in the average Western diet in comparison with omega-6 fatty acids.
